Éric Deloumeaux

Signed in November 2001 by Eric Black for £100,000 from French side Le Havre. He was obviously going to be a useful player to the club because he could play at centre back, right back, centre midfield and right midfield. He made his debut on 10th November as Motherwell travelled to Aberdeen and the final score was 1-0 to the Dons. From there on in, he was always a regular, featuring in defence or midfield, he gave the Motherwell side more strength and depth. However, one bad point was that he lacked pace and this was shown in a match against Rangers as he lunged in with a tackle from behind and was sent off for violent play.

In April 2002, the club went into interim administration and 19 players lost their jobs. Eric was offered to stay on if he took a pay cut but he turned this down as he had just had a baby. He was thus transfer listed and there was early interest from Coventry City but they pulled out at the last minute. Eric eventually joined SPL rivals Aberdeen for only £50,000 much to the disappointment of many Motherwell fans. He came back to haunt Motherwell on three occasions. In a league match on 18th August, he scored a volley in the last ten minutes which won the game for Aberdeen. In a league cup matches Aberdeen won 3-1 and in another league encounter as he scored a cracker as Motherwell were yet again defeated, this time 3-2. From being hugely popular with the fans, he found himself a target from the Motherwell boo boys.
