Central Defender, Ben Heneghan started his career with Everton, he had been on the books at Goodison Park for seven years where he was a regular in the under-21 side but was unable to make the break through into the senior side. Ben moved onto another English Premiership Club in the shape of Stoke City but again the young Englishman was unable to force himself into the proceedings at the Britannia Stadium.

Heneghan eventually moved onto National League side Chester FC in 2014 where he would finally make his debut in the senior game and he would play in over 80 first team games for The Seals, playing both as a right full back and central defender. Ben won many admirers during the 2015/16 season where a number of clubs in the English Football League and of course Motherwell had shown an interest in signing the defender.

On the 23rd June 2016, Motherwell won the race for his signature, Mark McGhee signed him on a two year deal maintain the clubs policy of signing English C internationalists who were showing some fine potential. Ben made his ‘Well debut in the newly formatted League Cup competition which saw the re-introduction of the group stages but unfortunately despite putting in a decent performance the side slipped to a 2-0 defeat.

Heneghan would form a partnership with veteran Stephen McManus, the duo seemed to be rigid enough pairing with McManus guiding the young defender through most games but a number of injuries and suspensions would play havoc in the clubs form during the 2016/17 season, despite early optimism around the club it was clear a battle against relegation would be on the cards. Perhaps it could be expected due to his lack of top league experience but Ben’s performances were somewhat inconsistent, he enjoyed some glaring early season reviews due to his tough tackling nature and ability to win aerial duels but he wouldn’t enjoy the same plaudits until he struck up a defensive partnership with Carl McHugh late into the campaign after Stephen Robinson took over the reigns as manager. He had struggled to form a partnership with on loan Zak Jules who particularly struggled with the step up from reserve football.

As soon as the season finished, rumours started doing the rounds that Rangers were interest in acquiring his services but no bid ever materialised, Ben made a solid start to the 2017/18 season helping the club progress into the Quarter Finals of the League Cup, he scored his first and only goal for the club with a fine diving header against Rangers in the opening day fixture of the league season. The tall defender would sign off in fine style with a 2-1 victory over Hearts at Fir Park, before making a move to English Championship side Sheffield United on Transfer Deadline day for an undisclosed fee.
