Nicky Law

Nicky LawSigned by on a free transfer from English side Rotherham United in the summer of 2011, manager Stuart McCall stated he met the player while on holiday and managed to persuade him to come to Fir Park, this would be the third time Nicky had played under McCall as they had worked together twice at Bradford City.

Nicky began his career with Sheffield United but would fail to make any real impact at Bramall Lane, making only a handful of first team appearances. He would however enjoy a highly successful spell with Rotherham United where his fine form alerted some bigger clubs who were keen to sign him, most notably Blackpool who were playing in the English Championship and who would eventually win promotion to the Premiership. However as Rotherham were keen on gaining promotion from League Two they declined all advances. After a chance meeting with Stuart McCall in Florida, the ‘Well boss managed to persuade the talented midfielder to take a chance in the SPL, which Law did and he proved to be a magnificent capture for the club.

Law would settle into life at Fir Park very well striking up a great partnership on the left wing with Motherwell stalwart Stevie Hammell, Nicky proved to be a highly creative player and when on the top of his game he was a joy to watch. He made his debut in a fantastic 3-0 win over Inverness CT on the opening day of 2011/12 season, his first goal for the club wouldn’t be too far away as he netted in the 4-0 rout of Clyde in the League Cup. He would certainly prove to be a pivotal player as the side would go on to finish 3rd in the league and clinch a slot in the Champions League for the first time.

With Steve Jennings moving on the following season, Nicky was moved to a more central role where this time he stuck up another great partnership with captain Keith Lasley, again he proved to be a consistent performer and not only did he help the club to a fantastic 2nd place finish in the SPL but he was voted in the SPFA team of the year alongside team mates Darren Randolph, Michael Higdon & Shaun Hutchinson. Despite being offered a new deal at the end of the 2012/13 campaign it was clear there was plenty offers on the table from numerous clubs. It of course became a huge disappointment when he decided to join Newco Rangers who had just recently been promoted to the 2nd Division, a clear waste of talent when there was better offers on the table.

In his two years at Fir Park he never missed a League game, Nicky made 86 appearances scoring 13 times for the club. His brother Josh would join Motherwell in May 2014.
