Jim Muir (I)

Jim MuirAs a nineteen year old, Jim Muir arrived at Motherwell from Ayrshire Junior side Irvine Vics with the club only paying £250 to secure his services.

Going by the name ‘Jumbo’ due to his massive stature, he made his debut in 1968 in a 2-1 defeat by Hibernian at Easter Road. He was a popular player with the fans as he put in plenty of effort and always fought for the cause. Jim was originally deployed as an outside-left but eventually moved into an inside position.

Muir enjoyed a fine moment when he scored the winner against Morton in a League Cup Quarter Final tie that took Motherwell into the 1969 Semi Finals. Over time he evolved into a centre forward as his height and strength made him an ideal target man, when former ‘Well favourite Ian St John returned as manager in 1973 ‘Jumbo’ was converted into a centre half.

Jim began to struggle over the spring of 1974 with a groin injury, this was perhaps a factor in his exit from the club on the 26th August 1974 when he was sold to Alex Wright’s Dumbarton. While there he played alongside Tom and Colin McAdam, both of whom would later star for Motherwell.
