Willie McSeveney’s football career started with Wishaw Juniors, but he made the step up to the senior ranks in 1948 and he joined Dunfermline Athletic, he was only nineteen at the time and he quickly became a first team regular. At East End Park he made an instant impression as his debut came in a 1-0 win over Rangers in a League Cup tie, Willie scored the goal which secured the win, a marvellous 40 yard drive which ricocheted off the underside of the bar and into the net.
Former ‘Well boss Bobby Ancell sold Willie to Motherwell for £1,200 in March 1954 as both the sides were in the ‘B’ Division. The transfer was seen as a massive coup as only a matter of years earlier Dunfermline had knocked back a bid of £4,500 from English side Middlesbrough. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Third Lanark where he also managed to get on the scoresheet, the club would enjoy his scoring feats as he netted against the likes of Arbroath, Kilmarnock and Dumbarton as the side secured the title.
Willie would serve the club for a decade, he proved to be a versatile player filing in at every position at some point apart from goalkeeper. Upon his retirement he went onto coach the reserve side, he helped developed the talents of young players such as Keith MacRae, Peter McCloy and Joe Wark amongst many other notable names.
