Andy Paton

Andy PatonAndy Paton was signed in 1942 and he joined from Kello Rovers. He was a centre-half who won over the ‘Well fans because of his crisp passing, superb tackling and he was excellent at intercepting passes from the opposition. He would always drift from the defence, dribbling up the pitch with great style, although it cost the side a few goals, it provided great entertainment. Because of this Andy Paton went on to become one of Motherwell’s most popular post-war players. Andy joined the club aged only nineteen years old, despite this he was highly experienced, having made his debut at 14 years old with Irvine Meadow. Then later with Kello Rovers. Andy was in the ‘Well side which won the League Cup and Scottish Cup in 1950 and 1952, also he picked up 3 Scotland caps.

Andy was the first player to win the Motherwell FC Supporters Association player of the year award, this was in his final season at Fir Park, in 1958, after sixteen years of loyal service. Andy was ‘gifted’ a free transfer in that summer, and after a year of playing he became Hamilton Accies boss in august 1959. Andy never shook hands at the end of any match after he was given a severe head-butt by Hugh Brown of Partick Thistle at the end of a game at Firhill.
