Motorola Cup

On Tuesday 25th July 2000, Motherwell added a minor trophy to their honours list. The clubs main sponsor at the time was technology giants Motorola who also sponsored First Division side Livingston. The company organised a friendly between the sides where the winners would receive a trophy known as the ‘Motorola Cup’. In a fascinating contest the Steelmen would prove to be too strong for livi and a 6-1 hammering was duly dished out to the Lothian club. John Spencer, Paul Harvey, Stephen Nicholas, Stuart Elliott, John Davies and Ged Brannan would all get on the score sheet.

After the match captain Andy Goram accepted the trophy from the sponsors. Plans were in place to make this an annual contest with the return fixture at Almondvale the following summer, but the match didn’t materialise as Livingston had achieved SPL status. So to this day the cup still sits proudly in the trophy cabinet in the Centenary Suite.
