Former player Bobby Watson was given the Motherwell job in November 1983 shortly after Jock Wallace resigned to take the reins at Ibrox. After a spell out the game Watson returned to manage Airdrieonians but he proved a popular choice with the ‘Well faithful when he filled the vacant post at Fir Park. Sadly however he never really took to the job and would leave at the end of the season as the side were relegated. Bobby’s team selections at times provided the occasional surprise at times as he would throw a lot of untried youngsters into the mix when the club really needed seasoned pros to help them out of the predicament they had found themselves in. He stated when he left it didn’t feel it was the same club that he once played for.
Upon his departure from football he later set up his own business. In 2018 he became the chairman of Airdrieonians.
