Appointed Motherwell boss in August 1981. Davie Hay was a former Chelsea and Celtic star and had been Ally McLeod’s assistant. As MacLeod struggled to bring the club back to Scotland’s top tier it was obvious change was needed. Davie was swiftly given the reigns of the first team when boss when Ally tendered his resignation. It actually took the board eight weeks to hire Davie as they looked down every avenue possible as they felt they needed to appoint the right man who could spur the side onto promotion.

Davie took to the job like a breath of fresh air, the highlight of his reign of course was leading the club to the First Division title where the side amazingly went on a 23 game unbeaten run, dishing out a number of hammerings to sides in the process. Perhaps only lowlight in Hay’s tenure would be losing to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup, the Dons John Hewitt netted in a record 8.5 seconds and the game was frustratingly won 1-0.

Sadly Davie was not comfortable with the set up at Fir Park, perhaps due to the length of time it had taken for the directors to appoint him as manager, he resigned at the end of the season after proving to be a success. He took up a new job in USA but before long he was back in Scotland managing Celtic. He would also add Lillestrom, St Mirren, Livingston and finally Dunfermline Athletic to his management CV.
