Goalkeeper Tom Allan joined the club in 1914 from Heart of Midlothian. At Tynecastle he made almost 200 first team appearances over two spells, Motherwell had been left with the tricky task of replacing the outgoing Colin Hampton and Tom was identified as the man who could take the reigns between the sticks. Despite enjoying a debut season in which he played 36 of the 38 league games as the club finished 18th in the league, Tom would eventually lose his place as one Jock Rundell would rise to prominence. Tom would make 39 League appearances during his tenure at Motherwell, the Scottish Cup competition of course was cancelled due to the outbreak of World War 1.
