A full back of international standard, George had enjoyed a highly successful career with Bobby Robson’s Ipswich Town before he came to Motherwell in 1989 from Gillingham. He stayed until 1991 before departing for Ayr United where he learned the managerial trade. There was a brief return to Motherwell as a player/coach before he accepted the post of Colchester manager. From there he moved on to his beloved Ipswich Town. One of the great full-backs of the 1970’s.
George carved out a great management career serving Ayr United, Colchester United, Ipswich Town, Derby County, Heart of Midlothian, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Apollon Limassol and a forgettable spell as Scotland boss.
