Born in 1881 in Perth, James Buchan started his football career with Hibernian before joining Woolwich Arsenal (known today as Arsenal). After his spell in London, Manchester City was his next port of call. In 1911 James headed back north to join Motherwell, the half-back would only stay on the scene at Fir Park for a solitary season. For the club he made 17 appearances in the first team and his one and only goal came in a Scottish Qualifying Cup match as the ‘Well romped to a 5-1 victory over Queen’s Park.
