Johnny Blair

John BlairJohnny Blair played in eight official seasons for Motherwell before his career like many others would be interrupted by the outbreak of World War 2. Signed in 1931 from junior side Yoker Athletic and it wouldn’t be too long before he would make his mark on the side. John’s debut would be a Lanarkshire derby against Airdrieonians on 26th August 1931, he would partner Ben Ellis at Full Back in a game which finished all square at 2-2. He would play a further 3 games that season as the club famously won the League Title, thus immediately writing his name into Motherwell Football Club’s folklore. Noted for having tremendous pace and passing skills as well as being a powerful and dominant centre half, perhaps the only flaw in his game was lack of goals as 2 goals was all he could muster in 275 appearances. Highlights in Claret and Amber would obviously be helping the club to 2 Scottish Cup finals but sadly both were lost, firstly to Celtic in 1933 and secondly to Clyde in 1939. However he did enjoy going on the successful South African tour in 1934. Surely if it wasn’t for the outbreak of world War 2 he would have went on to feature for the club for many more years. John of course would win one cap for Scotland, where he would play on the 4th October 1933 as Scotland played Wales at Ninian Park but lost 3-2.
