Kenny Black

Kenny Black joined the club in December 1983 alongside Kenny Lyall as part of a deal which took goalkeeper Nicky Walker to Rangers. Kenny had joined the Ibrox club straight from school where he was farmed out on loan to junior club Linlithgow Rose. He did make the breakthrough into Rangers side but was never really given an extended run in the side and by the time he joined Motherwell he had played in 24 league games at Govan scoring the solitary goal.

Kenny was a hard tackling left sided full back who was equally adept at playing in a midfield role, for whatever reason he just failed to fit into the scheme of things at Fir Park and after only making 18 appearances in claret and amber he was transferred to Hearts in June 1984 for a fee of £60,000. He also played in England with Portsmouth before heading back to Scotland to join Airdrieonians. He would really stand out for the Diamonds as he was an integral part of the Airdrieonians side which became renowned for their cup fighting traditions, he got a runners up medal in the 1995 Scottish Cup final as Celtic won 1-0.

Kenny would later go on to manage Airdrie United and would be a coach under Craig Levein in both the Scotland setup and at Leicester City. In January 2011 he would return to Fir Park as assistant manager to Stuart McCall. He would enjoy some fantastic achievements helping the club advance to the Scottish Cup Final in 2011 and a 3rd placed and back to back runners up finishes in the SPL in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 respectively as the side played some great attacking football. As the side endured a poor start to the 2014/15 campaign, after Stuart McCalls resignation Kenny would have a short stint as caretaker manager before leaving the club. As fate would have it, Kenny would link up with Stuart McCall at Rangers who were in the Championship at the time, Motherwell of course would meet them in the relegation playoffs where the Steelmen recorded a fantastic 6-1 aggregate win. Kenny and Stuart would later link up again at Bradford City, where they would yet again suffer from some playoff misery, losing to Millwall conceding in the dying embers of the game.
