Bobby Howitt signed Campbell from Morton in 1965, he burst onto the scene in a blaze of goals. Although a wing-half come inside-forward he could have played as a centre forward and he was a consistent marksman, he proved to be quite a versatile player while at Fir Park as he was also deployed in a number of defensive positions. Bobby was the clubs top scorer in the 1966/67 season scoring 18 times. In the 2nd Division title winning side of 1968/69 he wouldn’t miss a game and would score on 6 occasions. By the time he moved onto Stranraer in 1970, Bobby had played close to 200 games for the club with an impressive goal haul of 46.
He wrote his name into the folklore of the clubs history in September 1966 when he bagged all five goals in a stunning 5-0 victory over his his former employers St Mirren at Love St.
Outside of the game, Bobby was an articulate chap who had studied at Glasgow University where he gained a BSc degree.
