Charlie Cox

Charlie CoxCharlie joined Motherwell from Hearts in December 1951 and within 6 months of joining he had helped the Steelmen win the Scottish Cup. Charlie started his football career with Dumbarton Academy and he captained the side that won the Dumbarton league shield. He then went on to join Yoker Juniors but this talent was quickly spotted and it was Hearts who took him to Tynecastle in May 1944. Charlie was a cultured wing-half, he signed for £6,500 along with Tommy Sloan, and Charlie was a dedicated and meticulous player who linked defence and attack with considerable skill. Together with Tommy Sloan, he settled in quickly at Motherwell. In the 1952 Scottish Cup final he controlled Dundee’s record signing Billy Steel as Motherwell romped home 4-0. A year later he was in the team that was relegated. He played 89 league games for Motherwell and scored 4 times, he also scored 4 Scottish Cup goals. One of those came in an unforgettable 5-5 draw at Pittodrie and coming at the death as well. The Scottish Cup always seemed to bring out the best of Charlie Cox.
