Craig Clay

A neat and tidy midfielder, Craig Clay initially joined the club as trialist and won a two year deal after impressing manager Mark McGhee in back to back wins in the new formatted League Club where he firstly made his debut in a 3-0 win over East Stirling followed by another 3-0 win over Stranraer at Stair Park.

Craig followed a similar path to the club as that of Richard Tait who had also joined the club from English National League side Grimsby Town, who incidentally had just enjoyed a successful season as they had won promotion back into the football league.

Clay was one of those players who polarised the opinion of the support, some felt he didn’t offer much whereas as others felt he had more skill than given credit for. It is perhaps fair to say that Craig was a limited footballer at Premiership level but he never gave anything less than 100% when he played for the club.

The Englishman did leave behind the wonderful memory of a spectacular goal against Inverness, albeit wind assisted in a vital relegation encounter. He would make 39 appearances for the club scoring just the solitary goal. In July 2017 he joined English side Leyton Orient on a free transfer, it was clear he had lost his place in the side as the likes of Carl McHugh and new signings Andy Rose and Gaël Bigirimana were in the queue in front of him.

Capped once by England C, Clay had played most of his career in the lower English leagues having turned out for Chesterfield, York City, Halifax Town, Worksop Town and Grimsby before arriving at Fir Park.
