Tommy Coakley

Tommy CoakleyAt just 16 years old this little winger joined Motherwell from Bellshill Athletic in 1964 despite strong opposition from several clubs in Scotland and England. He was quickly in the first team and became the youngest ever player to play for the club. Although tricky and direct, he somehow did not quite fit in at Motherwell and moved to Arsenal in May 1966 on a free transfer. He played only 22 games for the Steelmen. Perhaps over-awed by the Highbury surrounds, he was soon back in Scotland, this time playing for Morton. His grandson Adam Coakley was on the books at the club for a while only making a handful of appearances and his son also named Tommy tried to buy the club in Mid 2007 but proved unsuccessful in these attempts. After his playing days came to an end he went into management serving a number of English non-league sides, most notably Walsall whom he managed to win promotion into the English Second Division. Tommy also ran a golf business with David Kelly, a forward who would play for Motherwell briefly in the 2001/02 season.
