Goalkeeper, Trevor Carson was an addition to the side for the 2017/18 season arriving in June 2017. He had spent all his career in England having come through the ranks at Sunderland but he was unable to break into the first team fold and was loaned out no fewer than six times serving the likes of Bury (twice), Chesterfield, Lincoln City, Brentford and Hull City.

Upon his departure from the Stadium of Light it was actually Bury whom he joined on a permanent basis making it his third spell with the side, he also would serve Portsmouth, Cheltenham Town and finally Hartlepool United before he arrived at Fir Park.

Motherwell managed to secure his services for a nominal fee and he proved to be a real bargain. He had an immediate impact, not only was he a fine shot stopper but he could gather crosses confidently and he possessed magnificent distribution with both feet, Carson had stated his time with Sunderland paid dividends as when he was training with Dutch coaches they put a real emphasis in using the ball with both feet, countless hours were spent perfecting the techniques.

Trevor made his ‘Well debut in a 5-1 win over Queen’s Park at Hampden in a League Cup tie, his performances over the season would actually help the club go on to both domestic cup finals but sadly he had to settle for a runners up medal on both occasions.

He was actually subject to a bid from Celtic during the January 2018 transfer window but this was rebuffed as the Parkhead club were no where near the value, they were looking for a cheap purchase and they eventually turned to frozen out Dundee stopper Scott Bain.

Despite having served Northern Ireland at U17 level and every age group through to the B squad a full cap had eluded him, his form at Motherwell didn’t go unnoticed he finally won a cap for Northern Ireland when he played against South Korea. He would go on to be involved with his country more regularly and he would add to his cap haul.

In November 2018 his season was brought to an end as he developed deep vein thrombosis upon returning to the club after international duty, his season was effectively over.

Upon his return to full fitness he found himself as backup to Mark Gillespie who had made the position his own with an array of consistent performances. After Gillespie moved to Newcastle United, Trevor was not only installed as first choice keeper but he was named the club’s vice captain.

While he would enjoy a run in the side he would suffer a few injuries that would hamper him and in October 2020 he suffered a knee injury that ended up requiring surgery. The 2020/21 season would actually see the side suffer from a bit of a goalkeeping crisis as his backup Scott Fox was hit with an early season injury and would miss almost all of the campaign, so a new keeper came in to provide competition in the shape of Aaron Chapman, then with Trevor’s long layoff confirmed, Jordan Archer also arrived then at the turn of the year, Liam Kelly arrived on loan from QPR at the turn of the year and he would cement the jersey as his own.

Carson would depart North Lanarkshire in the Summer of 2021 heading to Dundee United but his stay in Tayside would prove to be brief as he signed on loan with English side Morecambe who were actually managed by former boss Stephen Robinson. Then in the 2022/23 close season he would link up with Robinson again as he was now back in the Scottish Premiership managing St Mirren. The Paisley club would certainly provide familiar surroundings for Carson as former team mates Richard Tait, Charles Dunne, Curtis Main and Mark O’Hara were all on the books with the Buddies as were many former back room staff members.

A popular keeper with the Motherwell faithful, Carson was a quality shot stopper on his day, it was a real shame that a variety of injury and health problems curtailed his spell at Fir Park. While employed with the club he enjoyed a few cup runs and finals, won international caps after a rich vein of form and got to represent the club in European Competition. It can’t go unmentioned about his contribution in a match against Coleraine in the Europa League where he saved a trio of penalties in a shootout which helped the side progress to the next round of the competition.
