Billy Davies signed for Motherwell in March 1994 from Dunfermline Athletic for £50,000 and he must rank as one of the clubs best buys. I don’t think anyone at Motherwell could have imagined that the man Tommy McLean signed in 1994 would later be the manager of the club. Davies was a good purchase for Motherwell but he gradually fell out of Alex McLeish’s plans when the club were struggling in the league. When Harri Kampman took over as manager, Davies could consider himself lucky not to be released when the Finnish manager looked to have a complete clear out which seen many stalwarts being moved on, Billy did have the chance to join Greenock Morton on a playing capacity but he turned the move down. Davies soon became the Motherwell Youth Coach and his patience finally payed off when Harri Kampman left Billy was named as the new manager after having impressed chief executive Pat Nevin. He made the side into a very exciting one with the attacking style he adapted. He was given the luxury of signing players on big wages which included his brother in law John Spencer. Things didn’t go to well at the start of season 2001/02, he lost nearly a team of key players due to the club cost cutting and these were replaced with many sub standard additions which ultimately led to a relegation battle but Davies lost his job in October 2001 and was replaced by Eric Black. Billy took up a scouting post at Tottenham Hotspur late 2001, before taking up a head coach role with Craig Brown at Preston North End in England in 2002. Perhaps his biggest managerial achievement was taking a Derby County side to the English Premiership via the Playoff’s where one Stephen Pearson managed to score the winning goal.
