Alex McLeish brought in experienced forward Mario Dorner at the beginning of the 1997/98 season along with fellow Austrian Franz Resch from VfB Mödling. He really struggled to break into the side and after only making four appearances, he was allowed to leave on a free transfer. He and compatriot Resch joined English side Darlington. His former employers had been somewhat unhappy that Motherwell managed to prise away two of their star assets and had stated that they were both under contract, an issue that would grumble on over the summer of 1997.
