Pat DelaneyPat Delaney will always be remembered by ‘Well fans for the glorious free kick which nearly burst the net in the Scottish Cup replay at Ibrox. That great goal set Motherwell up for a famous 5-2 victory over Rangers. Pat was signed in 1958 from Douglas Water Thistle when he was 18 years old at the time and he developed into a fine player. Pat was initially a Centre Forward but Ancell converted him into a centre half. He was capable of playing orthodox full back and he could even play as a free scoring centre forward.
He made his first team debut against St Mirren on the 19th September 1959. In 1965, Pat scored twice for Motherwell in the Summer Cup final win over Dundee United, having assumed the captaincy from Bert McCann. He was the hero of the Summer Cup run, netting 8 times in the 10 matches required to land the silverware. In October 1966, Bobby Hewitt sold Pat to Dunfermline Athletic for £17,000 and he went on to play in a European ties. He also went on to play for Clyde and Airdrie.
