Ben Ellis

Ben EllisBorn in Aberbargoed in mid Glamorgan, Wales, Ben’s career started out with local sides Bargoed Town and the Tredegar before moving onto Bangor FC. It was from their word reached Motherwell of a promising young right back named Bill Ellis, prompting ‘Sailor’ Hunter and director Taggart to go over and see for themselves, but they were more impressed by his brother Ben. Learning that he was available for £800, a second visit happened, but the club was only prepared to go as high as £500. He eventually only came for a mere £350 plus when he had featured in 12 first team games, an additional £50 would go their way. As many ‘Well fans would be aware of, Ben would go on to feature in much more that the required dozen.

At left back, Ellis replaced Sandy Hunter, who had shifted between there and the right side. He was rated as one of the finest full backs ever to ply his trade in Scotland and according to those fortunate enough to see him play, he could head a ball further than most modern full backs can kick it. He also managed to be capped for Wales on six occasions. Ben was a strong, whole hearted defender and was a popular figure with the Fir Park fans and staff alike. An injury sustained in 1943 while he was working at a local engineering concern wrecked his career on the park. Ben, however, found it hard to leave Fir Park and took on the role of groundsman, before becoming assistant trainer in 1947 and then coach in 1949. After 25 years connection with the club, he finally left in May 1955. Sadly he died aged just 61 after taken unwell at work. Just around the corner from Fir Park is a street off Toll Street named after the legendary Ben Ellis. ‘Ellis Way’ was opened in 1990 by his daughter. A nice tribute for this Motherwell legend.
