Jamie Fairlie

Jamie FairlieJamie Fairlie arrived at Fir Park in 1987 arriving from Clydebank. He is perhaps better known for his two spells with Hamilton Accies rather than the Steelmen. In June 1974, Jamie began his senior career at Douglas Park after signing from Calderbank BC. Capable of playing in an attacking midfielder or as a forward he certainly possessed a number of credentials which would have seen him go far in the game but he seemed content staying in Lanarkshire.

Despite standing at 5′ 8″ he was strong, exceptionally creative and clever on the ball, Fairlie stayed with Hamilton for nine years making over 300 appearances, earlier in his career he suffered a horrible injury while playing against Falkirk in March 1981, he was fortunate to make a full recovery and resume playing. Jamie was also a Scottish ‘B’ International at Accies before he made the move to Lanarkshire rivals Airdrieonians.

At Motherwell he struggled to recapture the form in which made him a Hamilton legend. He did have a dream debut when he scored against St Mirren in the opening game of the 1987/88 Premier League season as the side were victorious. Jamie also played a pivotal role in the sides progress in the SKOL Cup when he scored against his former employers Airdrie which helped send them crashing out of the competition. However his finest moment in claret and amber came when he scored the winner in a quarter final tie against Hibernian.

As the goals were hard to come by, he quickly drifted out of Tommy McLean’s plans and he returned to Hamilton in 1988. As what always seems to happen when a player struggles to find the scoresheet for Motherwell, he would net when the sides met in a future fixture and he made no secret of his delight in doing so. As his career started to fizzle out his last port of call would be a spell with Clyde.

Football was certainly ingrained in his family as his brother Brian was also a professional football briefly as he played for Albion Rovers, the only Lanarkshire club Jamie failed to represent.

His daughter Susan Fairlie played football for Hamilton Accies’ women’s section and was named SWFA Player of the Year in 2010. A police officer, she signed for Celtic in 2011 but returned to Accies during the Scottish Women’s Premier League mid–season break.
