John Fallon

John FallonGoalkeeper, John Fallon will be best remembered for his time in Glasgow with Celtic rather than his short stay with Motherwell. At Parkhead he played in 184 matches between 1959 to 1971, often as understudy he did manage to win a number of honours with the club, he was the reserve keeper in the 1967 European Cup Final triumph which to date is ultimately the Bhoy’s greatest ever achievement.

John joined Motherwell during the 1971/72 season as the club were experiencing a bit goalkeeping crisis, he put in a fantastic performance against Rangers in a Scottish Cup tie at Ibrox as the Steelmen managed to draw 2-2 with many thinking he was the answer to the problems, but in the Scottish Cup replay the club fell to a 4-2 reversal and were also on the receiving end of a 4-1 and 5-2 defeat at the hands to Aberdeen and Celtic respectively.

Fallon was on the receiving end of a joke by manager Bobby Watson after the last game of the season. Motherwell faced East Fife at Fir Park who were struggling against relegation but only needed a point to maintain their top division status were offered a colour television to each player as a bonus if they could avoid the drop, naturally the Fifers managed to get the point they sought. Watson quipped to the ‘Well players in the dressing room that “instead of going out tonight we could all go round to John’s house and watch his colour telly”. A surprised Fallon rebuked “What? There’s no point, I don’t have a colour telly”. Watson finished by saying “But I thought East Fife promised everyone who helped them stay up a colour telly!”.

After a brief stay at Fir Park, John moved on having played in 12 first team games, he joined Morton where he wouldn’t make any real impact before retiring.
