Ray Farningham

Ray FarninghamMotherwell managed to beat off a number of other interested parties to snap up the rapidly improving Ray Farningham for a fee of £12,000 in 1986 from Forfar Athletic, he had managed to play over 250 first team games for the Loons. Perhaps a highlight at Station Park was to help the side reach a Scottish Cup Semi Final tie.

Ray proved to be hard working midfielder, neat and tidy on the ball he gave the club solid service in his three years in Lanarkshire, he also managed to chip in with a number of vital goals one of which  famously came in November 1986 at Ibrox when he stung Rangers late in a game with a diving header which secured a tremendous 1-0 victory which upset Rangers boss Graeme Souness due to the defensive tactics Motherwell adopted in the game, clearly forgetting his own side would deploy similar methods in their European fixtures when they met far superior sides.

It was never really made clear but Ray was sold to Dunfermline Athletic in 1989 for a fee of £50,000, the midfielders stock was growing quite considerably at the time as he was a consistent performer in the first team but manager Tommy McLean was no stranger to dabbling in the transfer market and decided he could cope without the Dundee born midfielder. Farningham would also serve Partick Thistle and his hometown club Dundee as well as a short loan spell at his first club Forfar before bringing his playing career to an end.

Ray would stay in the game upon retirement and tried his hand at management with both Forfar and Montrose. At Dundee he had spells as assistant manager and coach and with Gretna where he was chief scout a job he lost when the club folded in 2008.
