Bobby Graham

Bobby GrahamDespite being born in Motherwell and a fan of the club as a boy, Bobby Graham joined Liverpool straight from Muir Street Primary School and he played in Shankly’s magnificent side of the 1960s, alongside strikers such as Roger Hunt and Ian St John. His Liverpool debut was indeed spectacular – he netted a hat trick against Aston Villa. He served the reds from 1964 through to 1971 and he scored 31 goals in 96 appearances before going to Highfield Road with Coventry City in March 1972 and it cost £70,000. Bobby was to then link up with former team mate Ian St John at Tranmere when he was coach there. So it was therefore little surprise when St John upon his appointment as Motherwell manager looked to Bobby Graham to provide guidance up front and it proved to be a very shrewd decision. Motherwell had to beat off the likes of Portsmouth, Peterborough & Luton Town who were also vying for his signature.

He made a quiet debut at Arbroath in September 1973, but he was to finish the season as top scorer. With the arrival of Willie Pettigrew. This was to harness Graham’s experience. For 4 seasons this was to be a delightful partnership. In the summer of 1977, Graham moved to Hamilton Accies for £15,000 a then record fee for the Douglas Park side.
