Chris Humphrey

Chris HumphreySigned by Jim Gannon in July 2009, Chris Humphrey penned a three year deal with the club, after joining from English side Shrewsbury Town. Chris would make his debut as Motherwell played host to Albanian side Flamurtari Vlore in the 2nd Qualifying Round in the Europa League, in an amazing game the Steelmen ran riot winning 8-1.

Unfortunately a combination of injuries & personal problems kept Chris on the side-lines for a huge part of the 2009/10 season and when he returned to action he struggled to nail down a regular starting place due to the form of Jim O’Brien. He would however make up for lost time as he put in some impressive performances in the early rounds of the 2010/11 Europa League games as he would set up goals in both legs against Norwegian outfit Aalesund’s.

A lighting fast winger, Chris proved to be an exciting player to watch but equally frustrating at the same time, normally he would leave the opposition in his tracks as he bombed down the wing but as he looked to fire in a cross generally he left the ‘well attack far behind also or his crosses often trickled dangerously across goal with no takers. Although in later seasons he would work hard with assistant manager Kenny Black in perfecting his play and it would pay dividends as striker Michael Higdon was often the recipient.

Humphrey’s four years with the club were eventful as he represented Motherwell in the Europa League Competition three times as well as the club’s first ever venture into the Champions League, he was also a runner up in the 2011 Scottish Cup Final and helped the club achieve a 3rd and 2nd place finish in the SPL. Chris would score 9 goals for the club perhaps most notable were a fantastic long range free kick against St Mirren in 2010, a stunning long range drive against Dundee United at Tannadice in November 2012 and in the penultimate game of the 2012/13 season he ran three quarters of the pitch against Ross County before slotting the ball home. He did also net a vital goal against Dundee United on route to the 2011 Scottish Cup Final.

Impressive performances often seen him being linked with the Scottish National Side, he was eligible to play for the Scotland as his mother was born in Kilmarnock. In 2011 he was called up to the Jamaican national side where he would win his first cap against Panama, he would later win a second cap, again this was against Panama. He was later dropped from the squad as he alongside Birmingham City’s Marlon King broke a curfew set by manager Theodore Whitmore.

Chris was always on the radar from English sides and even Celtic had expressed an interest but nothing ever materialized. Despite being offered an extension to his contract at the end of the 2012/13 season, he decided to move onto pastures new joining English side Preston North End, rejecting interest from SPFA League One side Rangers.
