Although born and raised in Leith, Jackie Hunter slipped through the scouting nets of Hibernian and Hearts. It was former ‘Well player Jimmy Robertson who recommended Jackie to his father who was a Motherwell scout based in Edinburgh.

Initially he found it quite difficult to break into the first team fold at Fir Park, Motherwell boss George Stevenson had sent him to Tranent Juniors for a spell to see how the youngster would fair playing against men. After only playing 7 games for the Junior outfit he was called back to the club. He also stood out in the reserves as he bagged an impressive haul of 14 goals in the 1950/51 season.

Jackie and Wilson Humphries were ruthless in a ‘B’ Division fixture against Dundee United in which the ‘Well won 12-1, Jackie scoring 4 goals and Humphries netting a double hat trick immediately writing himself into the Motherwell folklore. The next week he scored a hat trick against Morton and he ended the season with 28 goals from 26 games, a fantastic season by all accounts. Jackie also played in the League Cup Final defeat to Hearts which was lost 4-2. He also played in the 1954 Scottish Cup Semi against Celtic, the side managed to take the game to a replay but sadly would fall to a 3-1 defeat, Jackie of course netted the consolation. Hunter joined Dundee United in 1958 but would only stay at Tannadice for a season before joining Morton.
