Jake Hastie

Jake Hastie is a product of the Motherwell Academy which he joined in 2009, along with team mate David Turnbull he represented Scotland (North Lanarkshire school pupils) at the 2014 International Children’s Games. The highly rated winger was part of the talented Motherwell U21 side who went on to win the Scottish Youth FA Cup in 2016 when they beat Hearts 5-2 in the final at Hampden.

Hastie made his debut in surprising circumstances, the first team had been suffering a number of injuries and as they lined up to face Celtic at Parkhead on the 15th October 2016 a number of ‘Well youth graduates were amongst the starting eleven making their first starts in the shape of Jack McMillan and Ross MacLean, Jake would come on as a late sub making his first team bow at the age of just 17. Sadly Motherwell fell to a 2-0 defeat on this occasion but still put in a good performance. Jake would make a further two appearances during the 2016/17 season against Hearts and Kilmarnock respectively.

The following season he was farmed out on a development loan to League One side Airdrieonians where he made 32 first team appearances scoring twice, he would continue his development the during the 2018/19 campaign when he was loaned to Alloa Athletic for six months.

Having made a great impression at Recreation Park he was recalled in January 2019 and was immediately involved with the first team, Hastie netted a header in a Scottish Cup tie against Ross County and it was this that was the catalyst for an excellent spell in the first team. He would make his first start against Hibernian where he would provide a tremendous assist for midfielder David Turnbull which turned out to be a winner.

Jake struck up a great partnership in a front three which consisted of Gboly Ariyibi on the left, Curtis Main in the centre and Hastie deployed as a right winger, Jake a natural left footer would enjoy great success where he would bomb down the wing and then cut in bamboozling defenders before hitting a shot at goal, using this method he scored an incredible goal against St Mirren and repeated this feat against Hearts, he also scored a fine double against Livingston in which he ran from his own half and slotted by their keeper to score one of his goals.

In March 2019 he won the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month award for February, he followed this up by winning two caps for the Scotland U21 side along with team mates Barry Maguire, Allan Campbell and David Turnbull against Mexico and Sweden.

Jake was nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award towards the end of the 2018/19 season along with David Turnbull, Lewis Ferguson (Aberdeen) and Ryan Kent (Rangers), Ferguson and Turnbull were the two favourites for the award but surprisingly Kent would win it.

As his contract was up at the end of the season the club offered him a new contract but by then the vultures had already began to circle. Despite stating in the press he would love to stay and continue his development at Fir Park negotiations dragged on for ages with many tabloids now reporting he was destined for Rangers, they however pulled out of the deal then changed their minds again, eventually Jake would accept their deal and he signed a pre contract with the Govan side.
