Michael Higdon

Michael HigdonAfter the departure of John Sutton to Hearts, Stuart McCall moved swiftly to secure the services of out of contract Michael Higdon from St Mirren during the 2011/12 pre-season. Tall, Powerful forward Higdon began his career with Crew Alexandria where he was initially a midfielder but his manager Dario Gradi converted him into a Striker due to his physical and height presence. Perhaps his highlight with the railway men came when he scored the winning goal in the last game of the 2004/05 season against Coventry City to keep them in the Championship.

In June 2007 he would join SPL side Falkirk, Michael would save the bairns from relegation in the final game of the 2008/09 season where he netted a second half winner against Inverness CT relegating them in the process. A week later he came on as a sub in the Scottish Cup Final but would have to settle for a runners up medal as Rangers won 1-0.

Seeking a fresh start he joined St Mirren in June 2009, whilst at Paisley he would again play in another final, this time in the League Cup but again he would have to settle for a runners up medal as Rangers cruelly snatched a late winner against the run of play. In his first season at Paisley he chipped in with several goal but it was the following season where he would really find his shooting boots netting no fewer than 15 goals in 33 appearances. Included amongst them would be a late winner he got at Fir Park as he helped the buddies to a 1-0 win. At this point that would be his fifth goal he had scored against the ‘Well since he arrived in Scotland.

Initially it looked like the big striker was looking for a move back down to England but when he seemed open to a move to Lanarkshire, Stuart McCall wasted no time in capturing the services of the Englishman. He made his debut versus Inverness in a 3-0 victory in the opening day of the 2011/12 season, Michael would have to wait until his fifth game in Claret and Amber before he would finally get on the score sheet, this coming in a 4-0 victory over Clyde in the League Cup. Goals would come steadily over the campaign where he would net on 16 occasions which included a hat trick in a 4-3 victory over Hibernian, he would of course score a spectacular overhead kick in that game. Perhaps most vital goal came when he scored the winner at Tynecastle which secured Champions League football for the club.

After an impressive debut season his 2012/13 season would prove to be quite spectacular for the player as he would score no fewer than 27 times, netting two hat tricks, Won the SPL Golden boot, Won the SPFA Player of the Year and helped the club to finish SPL runners up, the highest finish since 1994/95. He would of course also surpass ‘well legend Willie Pettigrew’s record goal haul. In late June 2013 he indicated through his agent he would not be returning to Motherwell for Pre Season training. Despite interest from clubs in England, he joined Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen.
