Zak Jules

Highly rated by Reading, Zak Jules arrived at Fir Park on loan in January 2017 as Mark McGhee looked to strengthen his defensive options as the club was embroiled in a relegation battle. The fear amongst the Motherwell fans was that they were getting a raw inexperienced defender as his only other playing time he had come in the English lower leagues with Hemel Hempstead Town and Braintree Town, a few days after the Under 21 Scottish international arrived, the club surprisingly released the other defensive cover Louis Laing who had just returned to Fir Park after a loan spell at Notts County and would subsequently join relegation rivals Inverness.

Jules possessed a great physique and pace, the left footed defender could play either as a left back or move into a central berth, he certainly had the necessary tools to succeed but his time at Fir Park wasn’t exactly a raring success. He made his debut in a 2-1 win of Ross County where he looked relatively assured in his brief substitute appearance, however over his next three games he would lose possession which would gift Hearts a goal, gave away a penalty when under no real pressure versus Celtic and he conceded an own goal in the instantly forgettable 5-1 defeat at the hands of Dundee he scored all their goals in the first half.

Zak would enjoy an extended run in the side however as regular centre back Stephen McManus was ruled out for the Season due to injury, he managed to score a winner a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock as new boss Stephen Robinson took the reigns initially as caretaker boss. His last performance for the Steelmen he was guilty of making a massive error where he stopped the ball from going out for a goal kick and passed the ball inside the box which led to relegation rivals Ross County grabbing a vital winner.

Jules would make ten appearances in total in claret and amber but he won’t be fondly remembered due to the many costly mistakes he had made.
