Callum Lang

Liverpool born youngster Callum Lang progressed through the Wigan Athletic academy working his way straight into the first team scene, but he had to have a degree of patience in turning out for the first eleven at the DW Stadium. He was farmed out on loan on numerous occasions serving English League Two sides Morecambe during the 2017/18 season then onto Oldham Athletic the following campaign before stepping up a level with English League One side Shrewsbury Town.

22 year old Callum was signed on a year long loan joining the Steelmen in July 2020, his parent club weren’t enjoying the best of times as they had just been relegated from the Championship and also had recently went into administration.

Lang proved to be a useful addition to the squad as he could play in any of the three attacking positions in manager Stephen Robinson preferred 433 formation. Quick, powerful and direct he made his debut on the opening day league fixture against Ross County at Victoria Park and it proved to be memorable for all the wrong reason as Callum was sent off for a rash tackle late in the game.

The ‘Well support wouldn’t get to see him in the flesh as he was on the books during the Covid-19 campaign where no fans would get to see their heroes in action.

Callum played in a Motherwell side that struggled for any real form and it would fair to say that he was probably one of the highlights of the side as he always seemed to have that creative spark to unlock a defence. He would score his first goal for the club in a Europa League fixture as the side thrashed Northern Irish outfit Glentoran 5-1, he would follow this up again with a goal in the next round against Coleraine but the side had to rely on penalty kicks to advance to the next stage.

Domestically, Lang would enjoy scoring back to back league goals against Ross County and Livingston in a 4-0 and 2-0 win respectively. He also scored a neat finished at Ibrox which would prove to be his last goal for the club as Wigan recalled him back early from his loan spell on the 6th January, Callum had made 21 appearances in claret and amber scoring five goals. It proved to be a bit of a turbulent December for the Club as manager Robinson would also exit just before the New Year.

Wigan had been struggling in League one and the introduction of young Callum into the first team paid instant dividends as he immediately got on the scoresheet, in fact he would go on to score nine goals for the Latics as he helped them heroically defy the odds and avoid a successive relegation. The following season he would continue on wit his great form as he helped them achieve promotion to the Championship by winning League One.
