Alan Mackin

Alan MackinAs a teenager Alan Mackin played for Renfrew before joining Queens Park. For the next few years the huge defender became a favourite with the Spiders fans. He appeared on Motherwell’s radar for all the wrong reasons on the 27th February 1978, Roger Hynd only a week or so earlier had won a manager of the month award as he had turned around the clubs fortunes since taking the reigns, his prize was a flagon of whisky, so as the side got ready to take on Queens Park in the Scottish Cup he sent out the players pre match to give the fans a dram. Motherwell of course would lose their bottle and Mackin would put in a man of the match performance as Queens caused an upset winning 1-3 at Fir Park.

Perhaps it was no surprise that he would be signed soon there after having turned down the chance to play in America. Alan would make twenty appearances for the club in all competitions before falling out of favour due to issues with manager Ally MacLeod. The dispute between the pair brought up a great interview in a newspaper where the reporter had asked Mackin who he would most like to meet, the player replied – ‘Ally MacLeod….in a dark alley’. It wasn’t long before he was out the door at Fir Park.

Alan did well with his next club Falkirk where he played over 150 games for the Brockville side. He would also represent Morton, East Stirlingshire, Alloa Athletic, Queen of the South and Clyde. After retiring from playing he served East Stirlingshire both as a chairman and director.

His son also named Alan was a professional Tennis player who had competed at Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
