Ally Maxwell

Ally MaxwellBorn just over the Clyde in Hamilton in February 1965, Ally Maxwell signed for Motherwell in 1981 when he arrived from Fir Park Boys Club.

He was slow to break into the first team, but ultimately made the number one jersey his own over time after ousting John Gardiner from the goalkeeper position. His highlight at Fir Park is obviously the 1991 Scottish Cup final, when Motherwell defeated Dundee United 4-3. Ally gave a supremely brave performance soldiering on when so badly injured after a clash with United’s John Clark, not to mention saving Maurice Malpas rasping effort with minutes remaining. Within the hour of winning the trophy Maxwell was in hospital and it was touch and go as to whether his burst spleen was to be removed. Fortunately, the hospital staff decided not to operate, as otherwise his career would have been over. A real cup hero in every sense!

Remarkably, that match was his final outing for Motherwell as he was side-lined until April 1992 because he and Tommy McLean became embroiled over a contract offer which led to Maxwell departing the club. He had been loaned out to Bolton Wanderers but was eventually sold to Rangers for £300,000. At Ibrox he was brought in as cover for Andy Goram, Ally would enjoy some trophy success in Govan as he played enough games to receive three league medals and he played in a League Cup final when Rangers beat Hibernian 2-1 at Celtic Park. He was also a runner up in the 1994 Scottish Cup when Dundee United managed to upset Rangers at Hampden.

Despite being called up to a number of Scotland squads he never won a full cap, he did however win a Scotland B cap against Wales in 1994.

In 1998 he was signed for Billy Stark’s Greenock Morton and a few years later would be manager of them himself. Later in life he moved to the USA where he became a coach with SC Del Sol he also is a UEFA ‘A’ licensed professional coach. Ally to this day can still be spotted around Fir Park from time to time if he is back visiting Scotland.
