Cammy Murray

Born in Bellshill in June 1944, Cammy Murray is best remembered for his ten year association with St Mirren rather than the Steelmen. At Love Street he holds the record for most consecutive appearances for the Saints first team and also the most consecutive league appearances. Since making his debut in August 1962 the Saints had played 224 competitive matches, Murray played in 222 of them, missing just the two Summer Cup matches in 1964. In May 2019 he was inducted into the St Mirren Hall of Fame for those amazing feats.

His brother George had been on the books at Motherwell a number of years earlier, Cammy arrived at Fir Park in 1972 but he wouldn’t enjoy the same success. When playing for Buddies he usually starred at right full back, however he was latterly a sweeper, a position in which he initially played for Motherwell reserves, before playing midfield for the senior team.

Cammy only stayed at Fir Park for a single season. He only played nine league games a scoring the solitary goal, this came in a 2-2 draw at St Johnstone. He joined Arbroath in 1973 where he finished his playing days, he would make a return to Motherwell in time but it was to join the coaching staff.
