James Main joined Motherwell in 1936, having previously played for Parkhead Juniors. During his time with the club he found himself on the fringes of the first team as the quality of player the club had on board at the time was too hard to displace. James did however go onto make 15 appearances for the club and netted twice. His debut goal coming in the 1936/37 campaign as St Mirren were soundly beaten 4-1 at Fir Park nearing the end of the season. Sadly though World War 2 broke out in 1939, James along with every other professional would have to put football on hold.
