Alan McCormack

Alan McCormackAlan came through the youth ranks at Preston North End, he was always on the fringes at Deepdale as former ‘Well manager Billy Davies was the boss at the Championship club. Alan had made a few appearances for Preston and Davies new the talents the youngster had, having also sent him out on loan spells in the 2004/2005 season to Leyton Orient and Southend United respectively. Terry Butcher snapped him up a day before the 2005/06 season was about to kick off, Alan signed a 6 Month loan deal and he was pitched straight into the squad to face Celtic in the seasons opening day fixture. Playing in the right side of midfield, Alan made a huge impact as he helped the Steelmen to a 4-4 draw in an amazing game, after the game Alan took lots of plaudits from pundits and fans and became an instant fans favourite.

Nicknamed ‘Baldy’ by his Motherwell team mates due to his rapidly receding hairline with him being aged only 21 years old. Alan would remain a key figure in the side all through his 6 months on loan, he netted his first goal in a 5-4 defeat at Fir Park in yet another goal feast. Due to his steady progress in the side when his original deal ran out in January, he was awarded an extended loan deal until the end of the season. Getting to the Semi Final of the League Cup was probably Alans highlight at Fir Park, sadly however Celtic ran out 2-1 winners. As the season progressed his performances dropped as did the squad’s overall consistency as an 8th place League finish was all that the squad could muster up after some pretty impressive scoring form earlier in the season. His ‘Well career saw him play 28 first team games, score twice and he got sent off once. Always popular with the Motherwell fans and it was sad to see him depart the club, upon his return to Deepdale he failed to break into the side and he was swiftly out on loan to Southend United before joining them on a permanent deal. Whilst at Roots Hall he played alongside former Motherwell players Stevie Hammell, Mark Gower and Richie Foran.
