Ian MacLeod

Ian’s early football career saw him star for East Kilbride amateur side Claremont. At just seventeen, Jim McLean offered Ian a full-time football contract with Dundee United, but after careful consideration, he turned that offer down because he was keen to continue his business studies degree at Glasgow Polytechnic. In 1977, Ian singed for Motherwell and in his first four years at Fir Park, he continued on his studies and he made his first team debut at Partick Thistle in March 1979. He went on to serve seven Motherwell managers in all, including Davie Hay, Jock Wallace, Bobby Watson and Tommy McLean. In 1982, he won a First Division championship badge with Davie Hay and in 1985, he added another under Tommy McLean.

Ian always put his Business Studies degree to good use. He was employed by the Edinburgh based Ferranti Company while at Fir Park and carried out his part time training schedules with Falkirk. Ian was 27 when he joined Falkirk in 1986 and it cost the Brockville club £20,000. He later went on to serve Raith Rovers. For Motherwell, he played in 243 league games, over 150 for Raith Rovers and 68 for Falkirk.
