Jim McCabe was signed in 1969 from Bargeddie Amateurs and it was occasionally suggested he could be a new Joe McBride or ‘Dixie’ Deans. His debut came against Dundee United and in that season he went on to score an impressive eight goals in the league. Jim had a sharp temper which was amply displayed in the League Cup tie with Clyde at Fir Park in August 1972. On that occasion he celebrated his equalising goal by giving the ‘two finger salute’ to Motherwell supporters who had previously barracked him, manager Bobby Howitt fined him for two weeks wages. This move was made more permanent in 1975 when he was granted a free transfer.
