Joe McBride

In 1957 Joe joined Kilmarnock from Rob Roy Juniors for a fee of only £200. Two years later he went from Killie to Wolverhampton for £12,000. In 1960, he swapped the gold of Wolves for the white of Luton Town in a £8,000 deal, but he returned to Scotland and Partick Thistle the same year in exchange for Jim Fleming.

Motherwell was the next stop in Joe’s career, joining the side for £8,000 in 1962. Joe was deadly in front of goal as his record shows. He made his debut in a goalless draw with Dundee United in November and netted his first goal in a 4-3 defeat at Dunfermline. In his first season at Fir Park, he had scored eleven goals, the very next he hit the back of the net 19 times.

Before leaving for Celtic, Joe helped the club land the 1965 Summer Cup by scoring against every side the club met. He was a man of many clubs, his career included spells with Kilmarnock, Wolves, Luton Town, Partick Thistle, Motherwell, Celtic, Hibernian, Dunfermline and Clyde. He was not successful with them all, but was an unqualified success at Fir Park and his departure was as sad as it was inevitable.
