John McMenemy was the son of former Celtic star James McMenemy and brother of Harry McMenemy, who played for Hearts. He started his career at junior outfit, St Roch’s and moved onto his father’s old side Celtic. It was from there he joined Motherwell in 1928 and went on to play in one of the most successful ‘Well sides ever winning the League Championship in 1932. That season John appeared for the Scottish League against the English League. The following season, he received his first and only Scotland cap, standing in for his brother Harry, who was injured, against Wales in a British Championship match in which Scotland lost 3-2. John’s Motherwell team mates John Blair, Willie McFadyen and Ben Ellis for the opposing side featured in that match and McFadyen scored one of Scotland’s goals. That season, he also appeared against the Irish league.
