Sam McGowan

Sam McGowan signed for Motherwell from Greenock Morton in 1942. Sam was a talented left-winger who certainly played his best football during the war period. He was in the ‘Well side that won the Summer Cup in 1944. He was also a regular in the 1945/46 season, when he made 27 league appearances out of a possible 30. When peace-time football officially got underway in the summer of 1946, he couldn’t break into the ‘Well side that was on the verge of better things. He then went to St Johnstone, but he was only to last the one season there, making 18 appearances for the club.
