Steve McDonald came to Fir Park via Australian outfit Sorronto, a club in which a link was forged where they would be a feeder club to the ‘Well providing talent from down under. Steve joined on a three month loan spell early in the 2005/06 season in hope of winning a permanent deal. If truth be the towering defender struggled to break into the first team, perhaps due to the consistent performances of centre backs Stephen Craigan and Martyn Corrigan, not to mention youngster Brian McLean who joined on loan from Rangers was enjoying some fine form. Steve’s debut in Claret and Amber was brief, he came on as a late sub on 24th September 2005 as Hibs were the visitors, the side were down 3-1, Steve was actually played up front and almost made an immediate impact as the opposition didn’t know how to defend against his sheer height, but it sadly wasn’t to be as the club fell to a defeat. This was very much it not only for the defender but the link with Sorrento didn’t bear any real fruits as no other players arrived via the link.
