Steve McLelland

Although Steve was born in Aberdeen, his early career seen him star firstly at junior level with Largs Thistle and then he stepped up to senior level in January 1980 when he joined Ayr United. His early days at Ayr seen him get a run in the side as a centre forward but he just couldn’t quite establish himself in that position. By January 1981, he was soon played as a sweeper and after that, he never looked back. Standing at 6 feet tall, he was obviously going to be a useful defender. He could easily deal with crosses and he was also a very pacey player who had very strong tackling ability. He was one of the stars in the Motherwell First Division Championship winning side, making 36 league appearances. The following season in the Premier League, he only had three starts as a defender before being switched back to centre forward. He made eleven appearances there plus one as a substitute at Dundee United in December 1982 as the ‘Well were hammered 5-0 that day. This was his last game for the club and he moved on at the end of the season. If Davie Hay remained the ‘Well manager, he would probably had much more Motherwell appearances to his credit.
