When only sixteen years old, Stewart signed for top ranking English side West Bromwich Albion. Despite doing well in the youth and reserve sides, which he captained he never made the breakthrough in the senior squad and he was on his way home. There was interest from Falkirk, Dunfermline and Motherwell. Ian St John managed to lure him to Fir Park. Stewart was obviously a useful addition as he could play in defence and midfield. He became a key figure in the Motherwell squad of the mid to late 1970s. In 1978, Stewart left for Dundee, it was Roger Hynd who sold him to Celtic and Scotland legend Tommy Gemmell for a fee of just £30,000. His career ended with Heart of Midlothian. A recurring pelvic injury allied to back problems eventually ended his career, he eventually took up a career in the Motor trade.
