George Newell

George is the son of former Blackburn Rovers, Everton and Aberdeen forward Mike Newell. Like his father he was also a forward, he started his football career at Goodison Park on a scholarship before heading to Bolton Wanderers in 2015 where he began his senior career. Despite having been on the cusp of the Trotters first team having made a handful of appearances he departed in the Summer of 2017 but he was quickly signed up by ‘Well manager Stephen Robinson.

Viewed perhaps as one for the future, George possessed a slight frame but came highly rated. He would spend two years in Lanarkshire but struggled to make any real impact, all of his appearances came during the 2017/18 season. Newell made his debut in a 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers in a League Cup group tie. His season was brought to an end in a Scottish Cup Semi Final tie, as the Steelmen were cruising to a 3-0 win over Aberdeen he was caught by a vicious elbow from Don’s defender Kári Árnason which surprisingly went unpunished and slipped off the radar post match, George ended up with a broken cheekbone.

Newell’s time in Lanarkshire was hampered by a number of injuries, in early 2019 he headed to League Two side Albion Rovers on loan as he looked for some first team football. He departed Fir Park at the end of the 2018/19 season before signing for English side Southport.
