Matt Penney

Attacking full back, Matt Penney joined Motherwell on loan in late August 2022 on a six month loan deal, manager Stevie Hammell had been left in a precarious position as both left full backs Jake Carroll and Nathan McGinley were both out with long term injuries.

The 24 year old had progressed through the ranks at Hillsborough with Sheffield Wednesday and he would go on to make just over 30 appearances for the Owls. He also enjoyed a number of short term loans serving Bradford City and Mansfield Town before joining 2.Bundesliga club St Pauli for the 2019/20 season which was interrupted by the outbreak of Covid.

Matt would join English League One side Ipswich Town for the 2021/22 on a free transfer, but despite featuring frequently in his first season he fell out of favour the next campaign.

Penney made his ‘Well debut in a fine 4-0 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Fir Park in a League Cup tie. Quick, attack minded and with pinpoint crossing ability the Englishman quickly became a favourite.

Sadly however, despite the 2022/23 season starting brightly for the Steelmen it quickly turned into a struggle as the side struggled to churn out victories despite playing well, but as the lack of wins mounted up the side tumbled down the table which seemed to affect most players confidence and this included Matt who’s initial high standards dropped towards the end of his spell.

Matt’s loan spell expired after the club drew 1-1 with Ross County on the 14th January 2023. It was hoped the deal could be extended until the end of the season as regular dialog in the media suggested that Stevie Hammell was keen to retain his services. A week after his departure it was announced that he had signed on loan with English side Charlton Athletic. It later transpired that Motherwell and Ipswich had initially agreed on a one year loan deal but it was the player that was insistent that it only be six months.

The full back made 18 first team appearances in claret and amber in all competitions.
