Bobby Russell (II)

Bobby RussellBobby Russell came to Motherwell late in his career but he still managed to make over 150 first team outings. When Tommy McLean brought him to Motherwell from Rangers in 1987, a few eyebrows were raised but he proved to be another shrewd purchase. On his day he was a great midfielder, creative and forward thinking he scored a wonderful solo effort against both Old Firm clubs which recorded two wins in 1989, the first was in February as he weaved in and out of three challenges by the Celtic defence before calmly hitting home past a despairing Pat Bonnar which secured a 2-1 win, his next was against former employers Rangers in October at Fir Park in a 1-0 win.

Later in his career he went to Northern Ireland to play for former ‘Well player Colin O’Neill’s Coleraine. He then joined Ayr United but a serious knee problem would forced him to retire.
