Jock Rundell

As Motherwell struggled in the early 1900’s, John ‘Sailor’ Hunter became the first man appointed as ‘Well manager, he tried to build a good Motherwell side and this wasn’t helped by the departure of star goalkeeper Colin Hampton, who went to join Chelsea in April 1914. His replacements were unsatisfactory until the arrival of Jock Rundell, who arrived from junior side Larkhall Thistle. Rundell made his debut in goal on a day in April 1916 when the ‘Well lost two games, played one after the other due to fixture congestion and wartime rulings.

Firstly a defeat to champions to be Celtic, then secondly to Raith Rovers who were lingering down in twentieth spot, but despite this start from the new keeper Jock would go on to make another 264 appearances as part of a hugely improving Motherwell side. In the 1924-25 campaign, the side began to struggle once again as the defensive until lost too many goals. Rundell was to lose his place to a tall, lanky 23 year old from Armadale by the name of Alan McClory.
